A few weeks ago, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 12, a range of four smartphones - two of which are not yet available for sale. Among them are the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, the two most premium models of this new generation.
A feature to detect people nearby
Thanks to iOS 14.2, iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max users will soon be able to benefit from a feature dedicated to accessibility for the visually impaired. Also present on the iPad Pro, it is based on the integration of the LiDAR sensor on the back of the devices.
Called " People detection ", this new option is available in the beta version of iOS 14.2, the update of which will be available to everyone in a few weeks. It will allow people with disabilities to know when there are people nearby. To do this, it is possible to enter the unit (meter or foot) and the distance in addition to the warning — sound, announcement or vibration. The distance estimation is performed in real time.

This feature will allow iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max users to know if a place is free on public transport or if it is their turn to checkout when they do their shopping. Overall, it can help them more easily find themselves in environments where there are other people.
Initially, the LiDAR sensor finds its use in improving the quality of augmented reality or photographs. It is also used on autonomous vehicles. Its operation makes it possible to calculate the distance with other objects then to map the environment in three dimensions, so that it finds all its meaning with this feature dedicated to visually impaired people.
Apple shows that it continues to take accessibility to heart with this new option, knowing that more than 2.2 billion people are visually impaired or blind in the world, according to the WHO. The apple brand offers several features on its devices so that they are more easily accessible to a large number of users. However, this new option will only be accessible on devices equipped with the LiDAR sensor, that is to say the iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max and the iPad Pro.
