HarmonyOS is Huawei's new operating system: ready to work on smartphones, computers and even cars

It's official, Huawei has presented its new at its developer event own operating system . HarmonyOS has been developed from scratch and thinking of being able to work on all kinds of devices, not just the smartphone . The tablet , the computer, the smart watch, the smart speaker and even the car. It all lies in how the new operating system has been designed.

The operating system has been around for a long time. We first had in November 2018 a confirmation from the company itself. But it was with the US blockade that interest in this new operating system has increased. They promised that it would be faster than Android . Now, with the official presentation, these news that have arrived little by little make more sense.

Compatible and adaptable

Under the name of HarmonyOS, this new Huawei operating system looks more like Google's Fuchsia than Android, Windows, iOS or macOS. Huawei boasts that it is the first operating system capable of working properly and with the same experience on any type of device . It has a distributed architecture, which allows it to run on different platforms while maintaining the user experience.

HarmonyOS

HarmonyOS adapts to different screens so that the user experience is the same regardless of the device.

The idea is that HarmonyOS adapts to any screen but also to different development methods. The HarmonyOS kernel is based on Linux, so it is capable of reading and running Android applications for example. But they also hope to develop the operating system so that in the future it can work with HTML5 applications for example. At the moment they keep separate the Android Kernel, Linux (LiteOS) and HarmonyOS itself. Regardless of that, they hope to replace Linux in the future with HarmonyOS.

The HarmonyOS operating system is based on a microkernel structure , this makes it much more versatile since it does not use a universal kernel for all devices, but smaller cores focused on different areas of the operating system. In principle, a more compact kernel is achieved and capable of running optimally on varied platforms . With this it also allows that, for example, permissions are not granted root to external services, as in Android for example. This means that, in principle, more security is offered to the user.

Huawei claims that HarmonyOS is a lightweight operating system capable of running on devices with reduced performance. For this they have a distributed architecture, which allows developers to make a single application and for the operating system to decide how to display and run the app in each product. HarmonyOS has a latency engine that establishes the execution priority of each task, thus making the IPC performance more efficient and improving the performance on the device. In other words, HarmonyOS will optimize the apps in the best possible way for each type of device we use.

What products will HarmonyOS bring and when?

The important question, when and where are we going to see this new Huawei operating system? At the moment Huawei phones are not going to switch to HarmonyOS, they keep Android for now . This yes, they ensure that they have HarmonyOS in the bedroom if relations with Google become complicated. According to those responsible for Huawei, they could make the change "in one or two days" since "migrating from Android to HarmonyOS is not very complicated." EMUI currently has more than 500 million daily active users in 216 countries and 77 languages.

Where we will see it will be in other products of the company. In fact, the first device with HarmonyOS will be an Honor TV arriving tomorrow .

According to the HarmonyOS roadmap, HarmonyOS development started in 2017 , which is when they developed the operating system kernel. But it was this year when the first version 1.0 of HarmonyOS officially arrived. A version developed in open source (the operating system is open source , by the way). A multiplatform development environment (IDEA) is launched in 2019 in the form of beta.

HarmonyOS

HarmonyOS es un sistema operativo open source, como Android.

By 2020 they hope to have prepared, among other things, a compiler for multiple development languages, a multi-device development environment and the general architecture of the microkernel, among other things. By 2021 they will focus on optimizing the software and its integration with the different products that are being launched. In an initial phase HarmonyOS will be launched only in China , although with time they hope to expand it internationally.

As far as products are concerned, in 2020 some computers will arrive with HarmonyOS and also smart health watches and bracelets with this operating system. By 2021 they hope to have smart speakers with HarmonyOS and already by 2022 and onwards virtual reality glasses and other products.

As always, it will depend on the acceptance of the ecosystem by developers and users to be able to see what the development of the operating system will be in the future. Huawei has a huge user base thanks to its devices, now it remains to be seen how it will gradually migrate to HarmonyOS and how it is the development of applications and services compatible with the operating system. At the moment HarmonyOS is more of an announcement and presentation, there is no demo of the operation of the operating system.
